Contact paths for local businesses
How to put WhatsApp on your website without losing leads.
WhatsApp works on a website when the button opens a prefilled message, one named person answers within a time you promised, an away message covers nights and weekends, a short form backs it up for people without WhatsApp, and every click is counted. The button is free; discipline is what converts.
Set up the button the right way.
Adding a WhatsApp button takes five minutes. What loses leads is everything around it: an empty message, nobody answering, no option for people who do not use WhatsApp and no way to know what the button produced.
Use a prefilled message
A WhatsApp link can carry starter text, for example: “Hi, I saw your website and I’d like an estimate for…” The customer only finishes the sentence, and you know which page sent them. Without starter text, many people open the chat, do not know what to write and close it.
Place it where the decision happens
Near the top on mobile, next to your project photos and at the end of the page. A floating button can help, as long as it does not cover content or the call button. On a P2L page the button lives on the first screen and repeats after the proof.
Keep the call option next to it
Some customers prefer to call and some are on a computer. WhatsApp should be one option, not the only one. In emergencies people dial; for calm quotes they type. Both paths, always.
Use WhatsApp Business
The free WhatsApp Business app lets you set up a business profile with a description, hours and website, plus quick replies, labels and an away message. Use the same number shown on your website and Google profile, ideally one separate from your personal line.
Decide who answers and how fast.
A chat that takes hours to answer feels worse than no chat at all. Before you publish the button, agree on who, when and with which words.
One person responsible
Name who answers during work hours and who covers when that person is on a roof or driving. If two people share the phone, agree on who replies so nobody answers twice or not at all. WhatsApp Business supports several devices on one number.
A realistic response time
Tell visitors what to expect, such as “we reply the same day during business hours,” and keep that promise. A promise you meet is worth more than an “instant reply” you cannot sustain. If you will be more than an hour, at least send “got your message, I’ll reply by 5.”
Quick replies for common questions
Prepare short answers about price ranges, service areas, what information you need and how to leave a review. Adjust them for each customer instead of pasting a wall of text. An early “can you send a photo of the problem?” saves a wasted trip.
After hours
Set an away message that says when you will reply and, if it applies, how to reach you in an emergency. Then reply first thing the next day, oldest messages first.
Back it up and measure it.
WhatsApp should add leads, not hide them. A chat with no record is a customer lost between memes and the family group.
A short backup form
Name, phone, service and a message, for people without WhatsApp or who would rather not share their personal number. Send it to an inbox someone checks every day, and confirm on screen that it went through.
Count clicks and where they come from
Track each click on the WhatsApp button as an event in your analytics, separate from calls and forms. A click is not a conversation; compare clicks with the chats you actually received. A different prefilled message per page shows which pages start conversations.
Privacy
When a customer writes, they share their phone number with you. Explain in your privacy policy how you use contact details, and never ask for sensitive data such as card numbers, Social Security numbers or ID photos over chat.
Save every lead
Chats get buried under other messages. Move each real lead to a list, a CRM or a spreadsheet with name, service, date and status. WhatsApp Business labels (“new,” “quoted,” “closed”) are a good first step.
What does it cost to do this well?
The button is free. What costs money is the page it lives on and the measurement that tells you whether it works. Market ranges observed in October 2026 across DFW; agency pricing varies by scope and we do not name competitors.
Focused one-page site (P2L): $249
Custom design, mobile version, a contact path by call, WhatsApp or form, on-page SEO basics, image optimization, one revision round and publishing. First draft within 24 hours of receiving your materials, ready within 7 days.

Everything above plus an initial diagnosis, search research, Search Console and sitemap, an indexing request, technical and local SEO, measurement of calls, WhatsApp clicks and forms, and 30 days of follow-up.
Small site from a local agency: $800–$2,500
Market range observed in October 2026 for 3–5 page template sites using the client’s own copy. Hosting, domain and post-launch changes are usually billed separately.
Custom multi-page site: $3,000–$10,000+
Market range observed in October 2026 for sites with original design, copywriting, pages per service and city, and features such as booking or a catalog. It makes sense when every page answers a real search.

Frequently asked questions.
The questions we hear most often about this topic, answered briefly.
How much does it cost to add WhatsApp to my website?
The link and the WhatsApp Business app are free. If you already have a site, adding the button properly is a small change. At P2L every page from $249 includes a call, WhatsApp or form path, and digital presence from $499 adds click measurement.
Should I use my personal number?
Better not. A business-only number on WhatsApp Business lets you set hours, a description and an away message, keeps your personal life separate and lets you hand the phone to someone else without losing the business history.
What happens if I do not reply quickly?
The customer messages the next name on the list. Publish a realistic time such as “we reply the same day during business hours” and set an away message. A promise you keep is worth more than an “instant reply” you cannot sustain.
How do I know whether the button brings customers?
Log every click as an event in your analytics and compare it with the chats you actually received. A different prefilled message per page tells you where each conversation came from. Without that you only have a feeling.
Can I ask for payment or insurance details over WhatsApp?
Do not ask for card numbers, Social Security numbers or ID photos over chat. Use WhatsApp to coordinate and quote, and leave sensitive data to an invoice or a secure payment system. Explain in your privacy policy how you use the customer’s number.
